Moving from Toronto to Hamilton

By Tory Akene, REALTOR® · June 15, 2026 · 8 min read

Every week, I hear the same question from Toronto families: "Is it really worth moving to Hamilton?" After helping hundreds of families make this transition, the answer is almost always yes — but only if you understand what you're gaining and what you're leaving behind.

Why Families Are Leaving Toronto for Hamilton

The math is straightforward. The average detached home in Toronto now sells for well over $1.2 million, while the Hamilton Mountain offers comparable family homes in the $650,000–$900,000 range. That price difference doesn't just buy you a bigger house — it buys you a different quality of life: a backyard, a driveway, a garage, and a neighbourhood where kids still play outside.

The Commute: What to Really Expect

Let's be honest about the commute. Driving from the Hamilton Mountain to downtown Toronto takes 55–75 minutes depending on traffic. GO Transit from Hamilton GO Centre takes about 70 minutes to Union Station. Many families do a hybrid approach — working from home 2–3 days and commuting the rest.

The key is setting realistic expectations. If you're commuting five days a week to downtown Toronto, this move may not be for you. If you're remote/hybrid or commuting to Mississauga, Oakville, or Burlington, the Hamilton Mountain is exceptionally well-positioned.

What Your Budget Gets You

$600,000–$700,000

Updated bungalow or townhome on the East or West Mountain. Great starter homes with yards.

$700,000–$850,000

Detached 3–4 bedroom family home on the Central or East Mountain. Renovated kitchens, finished basements.

$850,000–$1,000,000+

Executive home in Ancaster or Binbrook. Larger lots, premium finishes, top school districts.

Schools: The Real Deal

Hamilton Mountain has strong school options across public, Catholic, and French Immersion streams. Corpus Christi Catholic Elementary achieved a perfect 10/10 on the Fraser Institute Report Card. Mountview Public and Ancaster Meadow are consistently well-rated. The key is applying early for French Immersion and Catholic school boundaries.

The Lifestyle Shift

What surprises most Toronto transplants is how much they miss — and don't miss. You'll miss the walkability, the 24-hour food options, and the cultural density. You'll gain space, nature, a slower pace, and a community that knows your name. The Hamilton food scene is exceptional and growing, the escarpment trails are world-class, and the creative energy in the city is undeniable.
