Waterfall Hiking Tips
Everything you need to know before you head out.
Wear Proper Footwear
Trails can be muddy, rocky, and uneven — especially near the escarpment. Waterproof hiking boots or sturdy trail shoes are recommended. Avoid running shoes after rain.
Best Seasons
Spring (April–June): Biggest volume — snowmelt and rain make waterfalls thunder. Fall (September–October): Spectacular foliage framing every cascade. Winter brings ice formations but trails can be treacherous.
Stay on Marked Trails
The escarpment is fragile and dangerous. Cliff edges can be unstable, and erosion is real. Always follow marked paths, obey signage, and keep children close near lookouts.
Respect Property & Conservation
Some waterfalls are on private land with public trail access. Stay on the trail, don't trespass, and carry out everything you carry in. Many conservation areas charge parking fees — bring cash.
Family-Friendly Options
Many trails are free, flat, and stroller-friendly — Battlefield House Falls, Albion Falls viewing platform, and Ancaster Mill Falls are great for families with young kids. Pack snacks and water.
Photography Tips
Overcast days produce the best waterfall photos — no harsh shadows. Use a slow shutter speed for that silky water effect. Morning light and golden hour create magical conditions in the gorge.
Peak Season Alert
Spencer Gorge Conservation Area (Webster's Falls & Tew's Falls) now requires advance reservations during peak season (Victoria Day to Thanksgiving). Book early at conservationhamilton.ca. Other waterfalls are generally free to access.
Hamilton has more waterfalls than Niagara Falls. Let that sink in.
