French Immersion Options

French Immersion is one of the most sought-after programs for Hamilton families. Here's everything you need to know about FI options on the Mountain, including how to apply and when.

How French Immersion Works in Hamilton

In the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, French Immersion typically begins in Grade 1 (Early French Immersion) or Grade 4 (Late French Immersion). Students receive core instruction in French for the first few years, gradually transitioning to a mix of English and French.

Application Process

Key deadline: Applications typically open in November/December for the following September. Spaces are limited and assigned by lottery if oversubscribed.

You do not need to live within the school's regular boundary to apply for French Immersion, but you must arrange transportation if the FI school is outside your catchment.

Hamilton Mountain FI Schools

  • Ancaster Meadow — Early FI, Ancaster area
  • Dr. Davey — Early FI, West Mountain
  • Norwood Park — Early FI, Central Mountain
  • Chedoke — Late FI, West Mountain

Tips for Parents

  • Apply early — FI waitlists can be long at popular schools.
  • Consider Late FI (Grade 4 entry) as a backup if Early FI spaces are full.
  • No French fluency is required for entry — kids pick it up remarkably fast.
  • Check the HWDSB website annually for updated FI school locations and boundaries.
